The last 4 days have been rather serious and sappy but today that is not the case
Today I am thankful for spare first aide kits in the car.
Of course there is a story behind this!
For dinner tonight I decided to make meat loaf with mashed potatoes. All was going great. I had gotten the meat loaf in the oven and the potatoes were all pealed and ready to be cut and put in the pot to cook. I was on the very last one when the knife slipped! I hit my index finger on my left hand. I screamed and ran to the sink. It was bleeding pretty dang bad so I couldn't tell how bad it was. I grabbed a towel and just started applying pressure. I was crying and in pain and just really didn't know what to do next. Of course had it been someone else I would have know exactly what to do. Jordan was right there trying to make sure I was ok, I was telling him Yes I'm fine....while thinking, great, I'm going to have to go to the ER! Chris came to the rescue and put some flour on it to try to clot the blood. I've heard of doing that before but never tried it. It didn't completely stop the bleeding but it helped a lot. We got the bleeding stopped and went to clean it and put a bandage on. Chris goes to the medicine cabinet and there is NOTHING! No bandages, no gauze, nothing!
As we are sitting there trying to figure out which neighbor to bug I said "wait, isn't there a small first aide kit in the car?" Chris went to see and came back in with a box full of goodies. It had EVERYTHING in there. We have had the thing in our trunk for 5 years and never opened it. We got the wound cleaned enough to see it wouldn't need stitches, put some medicine on it, and wrapped it up tight. I guess I should also say I'm thankful for my fingernail which stopped the knife from cutting the tip of my finger off. After I calmed down for a few I was able to finish dinner and go about my night.
I know it silly but I am so thankful for that kit! Without it we would have had to make a very quick trip to a store but now we have time to go replenish out supply!
So what did I learn today? That when you use the last bandage put it on the list of things to get. The second lesson I learned is, if I want to be a real cook I need to learn how to curl my fingers up while cutting. I see them do it on TV and now I know why!!!
